The commander of the Iranian Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sairee said that Iran does not intend to block the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. He added that Iran is capable of doing it, but will not attempt it.
The Strait of Hormuz is of strategic importance not only for Iran but for the whole world. About 40 % of world oil exports are shipped through it. The Iranian authorities have repeatedly said they will block the Strait, if the disagreement on the controversial nuclear program will lead to foreign military intervention.
