Georgian Prosecutor General Archil Kbilashvili left the post after inauguration of President Georgy Margvelashvili and resignation of Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili. According to the new Constitution, Kbilashvili’s successor will be appointed by the prime minister, not the president. Kbilashvili emphasized that Irakly Garibashvili, his most likely successor, had nothing to do with the resignation.
Nana Devdariani, head of the Center for Global Research, believes that the true reason for Kbilashvili’s leaving office was inability to do what people expected from him. The population is disappointed that justice was not done and obvious crimes during the regime of President Mikheil Saakashvili were unpunished, with exception of Merabishvili and Akhalaya.
At the same time, the expert reminds, that Ivanishvili has said many times that harsh actions against Saakashvili’s regime would provoke discontent of the West. Devdariani characterized Kbilashvili as a good professional and a very honest man who had made the right choice. The ex-prosecutor general himself has a good image of Ivanishvili.
