US and Iranian chief diplomats to meet in Geneva

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will meet in Geneva within the framework of Tehran’s talks with six mediators (Russia, the US, China, France, UK, Germany), 1news.az reports.

The unscheduled visit is a sign that the US and Iran may reach agreements on the nuclear problem, possibly the first accords in the past 35 years.

Switzerland started a new round of talks of the six mediators and Iran yesterday. The US delegation is headed by Wendy Sherman, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.

John Carney, spokesman of the White House, said yesterday that key sanctions will remain in force until a full-fledged agreement is signed for the nuclear program. US President Barack Obama has called ease of sanctions, should such document be signed, very moderate.

Iran presented a new plan for settlement of the nuclear program at the Geneva talks of October 15-16. The initiative consists of 3 stages. Iran insists on uranium enrichment, irritating the West by provoking fears that the nuclear program is of military nature.
