The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces has demanded the organization of humanitarian corridors on regime-controlled territories and the release of rebels as conditions for participating in the Geneva-2 Conference, Associated Press reports.
Coalition leader Ahmed Jarba said that the opposition will not take part in the conference if it sees an Iranian delegation involved or if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad sets no clear date for his resignation. Moreover, the rebels demanded the attendance of militants and the filing of a written declaration of Russia’s position.
The National Coalition held a meeting in Istanbul on Saturday to discuss whether to attend the upcoming conference or not.
Over 100,000 people have died in the Syrian conflict since March 2011. Russia and the US have initiated the Geneva-2 Conference without specifying the date. Lakhdar Brahimi, Special Envoy of the UN and LAS, said that the conference could only be possible if attended by the Syrian opposition.
