Russia has to protect Iran and Syria in order protect itself, member of the Institute of International Security of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexey Feneko says.
According to him, Russian and US positions on the Iranian nuclear crisis are quite different. "The United States practically demands that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty be reconsidered, as the US denies Iran's right to enrich uranium, which is spelled out in the document," he says.
He also underlines that the US pressure on Iran aimed at the country's disarmament is a very dangerous precedent. Such a tactic may some day be used against Russia as well, Fenenko says.
The same applies to the situation surrounding the Syrian crisis, he believes.
