Expert says role of Saudi Arabia and Qatar in Middle East is exaggerated

According to researcher from the International Security Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexey Fenenko, the role of Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the Middle East politics is exaggerated. Such a well-promoted myth is favourable for all powers in the region, the expert stresses.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar are by no means as powerful as the United States or Russia, Fenenko says. In 2003 the US even discussed the possibility of the collapse of Saudi Arabia. The US believed that, if left, a new coup undertaken by younger members of the royal family would probably lead to a dissolution of the state.

According to the expert, Russia is trying to show the world that it has issues with Saudi Arabia and Qatar and not with the United States. The US itself explains that these countries depend on America and would be vulnerable if it left them in case of Iranian aggression. The reason is that the US wants to keep its military presence in the region, the expert says.
