While on a tour to Central Asia, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon met in Baku with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mamedyarov, APA reports quoting the press service of the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry.
The main subject of the meeting was the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Elmar Mamedyarov informed the UN Secretary General about the latest situation in the negotiations on a settlement of the conflict and explained Azerbaijan's position in this
issue in detail to Ban Ki-moon.
The minister remarked that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict can only be solved within the norms and principles of international law and the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
For his part, Ban Ki-moon expressed hope for a speedy resolution of the conflict and emphasised that resolving the conflict would positively impact on the whole region.
The UN Secretary-General touched on the positive results of the New York international state-donors' conference aimed at long-term aid to help Haiti recover from the recent devastating earthquake. Ban Ki-moon made special mention of the support rendered by Azerbaijan in that situation.
