Irakly Garibashvili, the recently appointed Georgian Prime Minister, responded to retorts of the UNM about violations of the presumption of innocence in case of ex-Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili. He said that democracy was based on lies and fakery during the rule of President Mikheil Saakashvili.
Iosif Tsiskarishvili, a Georgian political analyst, said that Garibashvili’s statement was a reaction to the aggressive behavior of the UNM. The newly appointed prime minister was irritated by biased evaluations of his achievements as interior minister the past year.
At the same time, the expert sees nothing new in Garibashvili’s words because the same was said before the presidential polls and under the rule of the new president. Tsiskarishvili believes that people want to see at least part of justice.He noted that the West demanded Georgian authorities to keep Saakashvili untouched and ask no questions. The expert added that the UNM was still strong. However, Tsiskarishvili expects Saakashvili’s supporters to be punished for at least economic crimes. He also called correlation of Vano Merabishvili in Georgia and Yulia Timoshenko in Ukraine uncorrect.
