Russia agrees to demarcate Caspian Sea

Russian President's Special Representative for Demarcation and Delimitation, Ambassador Igor Bratchikov, says Moscow is ready  to compromise and demarcate the Caspian Sea.

"Russia has shown that its position was rather flexible and that it was ready to compromise," the ambassador is quoted as saying.

According to him, the very procedure of the demarcation is still to be defined.

The legal status of the Caspian Sea is unclear, since the regional states have different approaches to the matter. Some believe that the Caspian Sea is a sea and some that it's a lake, which means that it's not clear what regulations of international law should be applied to it.
