President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy have published the final declaration for the Eastern Partnership program. The document reiterates the goals of the program and its achievements. Barroso and van Rompuy said that the 3rd summit of the Eastern Partnership in Vilnius will prove efforts to consolidate the European continent.
The goal of the program is to build a democratic, prosperous and stable neighbourhood based on dominance of the law. The summit will focus on progress achieved in Moldova and Georgia and signing of association agreements. The offer to Ukraine to sign the association agreement is still in force, the EU leaders reminded. They noted that Ukraine needs to show political will and to fulfill the obligations declared in December 2012.
Barroso and van Rompuy added that members of the Eastern Partnership do not need to end trade with Russia, on the contrary, everyone will win and gain benefits from association.
According to the document, the Vilnius summit and the past 4 years of the Eastern Partnership are only the first steps of cooperation between the EU and its Eastern partners.
