US assistant secretary of state visits Tbilisi

Victoria Nuland, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, has arrived in Tbilisi from the session of OSCE foreign ministers in Kiev and will discuss strategic partnership of the US and Georgia, regional and international problems and Georgian-Russian relations, ITAR-TASS reports.

She will meet Georgian President Georgy Margvelashvili, Defense Minister Irakly Alasania, Speaker of Parliament David Usupashvili, leader of the parliamentary majority David Bakradze and Prime Minister Irakly Garibashvili in the second half of the day.

Georgian Foreign Minister Maya Panjikidze and US Secretary of State John Kerry met in Brussels on December 3. Panjikidze said that they had discussed bilateral relations and Georgian-Russian relations. She noted that Kerry had had approved the balanced approach of Georgia in relations with Russia.

Local experts believe that Nuland’s visit is connected with the visit of Kerry to Georgia in the first half of 2014. The assistant secretary of state will visit Moscow after Tbilisi.
