Putin disbands RIA Novosti

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree on measures to improve efficiency of state mass media, disbanding RIA Novosti, Voice of Russia, State Fund for TV and Radio Programs (property transferred to VGTRK) and the Russian Book Chamber (property transferred to ITAR-TASS).

RIA Novosti and Voice of Russia will be reorganized into Russia Today headed by Dmitry Kiselev. The new agency will cover state politics and social life of Russia for foreign readers. The property of RIA Novosti will be under control of Russia Today.

The government is yet to carry out all procedures and determine the volume of financing in a month. The decree has 3 months for fulfillment.
