Russia solves Ukraine’s problems – experts

Russian and Ukrainian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Victor Yanukovych concluded talks in Moscow yesterday. Ukraine got a 30% discount for gas, as well as a Kremlin pledge to purchase Ukrainian government bonds worth $15 billion. Alexey Mukhin, Director of the Center for Political Information, believes that Ukraine won some time and that Russia helped it save face by keeping the Customs Union off the agenda.

Alexey Poltarakov, academic secretary of the Institute for Ukrainian Policy, reminded that Russian banks had halted loans for Ukrainian economy in spring-summer. The $15 billion it will receive will be the boost to cope with the default that may happen. The expert noted that no documents were signed to restrict Ukraine from signing association agreements.

Alexey Vlasov, Editor-in-Chief of Vestnik Kavkaza, pointed out that Yanukovych and Azarov had been given a chance to restore trust of his citizens. The expert noted that the opposition can no longer blame Yanukovych for secret deals with Putin or plans to join the Customs Union. Yanukovych can now transform Maidan Nezalezhnosti into the traditional form of negotiations with no aspect of Yanukovych’s political prospects.
