The murder of Altynbek Sarsenbayev, a notable opposition figure of Kazakhstan, and his assistants in 2006 was initiated by Rakhat Aliyev, businessman and diplomat, Kazakh ex-Ambassador to Austria and ex-son-in-law of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, said Deputy Prosecutor General Andrey Kravchenko today. Rakhat Aliyev was sentenced to 20 years in jail in Almaty in 2008.
Eduard Poletayev, a political analyst, told Vestnik Kavkaza that the murder was perceived as a political act. Sarsenbayev was an authoritative figure in the socio-political life of the country, only to be killed by a crime boss on the outskirts of the city.
The expert noted that Aliyev’s involvement in the murder had been a subject of talks earlier. He said that it was unclear why Utembayev was in prison as the one who had paid for the murder, if Aliyev was the one responsible. Poletayev does not predict too much noise from the new statements. Kazakhstan may activate efforts for extradition of Aliyev. Many questions still remained, he concluded.
