Transportation of Syrian chemical weapons to Latakia was the most complicated stage in the process of their destruction and Russia will provide maximum assistance possible at this stage, said Mikhail Ulyanov, Director of the Department for Security and Disarmament of the Russian Foreign Ministry, RIA Novosti reports.
He noted that about 1,000 tons of chemical weapons will be loaded on Dutch and Norwegian ships. The diplomat said that failure to transport the chemicals by December 31 was not a reason to dramatize the process.
Ulyanov added that mustard gas, sarin and VX elements will be transported. The second portion of chemical weapons will be moved by February 5. It will consist of less hazardous elements.
