Direct elections cancelled in Karachay-Cherkessia

Karachay-Cherkessia has joined Dagestan, Ingushetia, North Ossetia and Kabardino-Balkaria as a republic that cancelled direct elections of its leader yesterday. The parliament of Karachay-Cherkessia passed amendments to the law on the head of the republic in two readings, who will now be elected by the parliament.

Karachay-Cherkessian Leader Rashid Temrezov attended the parliamentary voting for the amendments. He emphasized the need to concentrate on the most topical problems and improvement of the socio-economic situation.

The Russian law on elections of governors and heads of regions was adopted in April 2012.
