Russia's military base in Armenia will remain until 2046, not 2044, the deputy minister of foreign affairs of Armenia, Shavarsh Kocheryan told Armenian Public Television, Novosti Armenia reports.
The protocol was signed last Friday and changed the period of the presence of the Russian base from 25 to 49 years, starting from the ratification of the document in 1997.
The deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that this protocol is not just a symbol, but a direction of the relationship between the two countries. He also noted that it is not a reply to the union of Azerbaijan and Turkey.
According to the new document, Russia and Armenia will mutually defend the territories of Armenia. The Russian side will also provide new military equipment, which is also very important.
Noting that a country must defend itself, Kocheryan said that the Russian presence in the region is another step towards stability in the region. "Stability for us is the top priority," he said.
