Vladimir Sazhin, a senior scientist and an expert of Iran at the Institute for Oriental Studies of the RAS, said that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the US a devilish state yesterday for an ideological reason. He noted that there was ideological force balancing the liberal policy of President Hassan Rouhani to keep the Iranian state system running.
The expert reminded that efforts for reconciliation, concessions in the nuclear program, Geneva agreements and settlement of the issue for at least half a year were approved by Khamenei. There US were the ‘source of evil’ for Iran for 36 years as an ideological aspect but Iran was still forced to sign the agreements. Khamenei had to make some anti-American and anti-Western statements to balance the real politics and ideological moments.
Sazhin said that the declaration will not be followed by nullification of agreements and escalation of tensions with the West. He believes that the economic situation in Iran is so grave that it will have nothing to do but make nuclear agreements with the mediators and the IAEA. Inability to fulfill the Geneva agreements will be punished with new sanctions and may cause collapse of the ruling regime in Iran.
