Russia has started issuing visas for Georgian truckers. The Road Transportation Agency has detailed information about the process and forms that need to be filled to get visas.
Mikhail Khmaladze heading the Agency said that many applications for visas had been received and many employed drivers had a chance to find jobs that way. According to agreements reached by Grigory Karasin, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, and Zurab Abashidze, Special Envoy of the Georgian PM for Relations with Russia, about a thousand truckers and passenger drivers will get visas.
A trucker has been one of the most prestigious professions in Soviet Georgia. Russia and Georgia had an agreement on road freighting signed on February 3, 1994. Georgia cancelled the agreement unilaterally in October 2006. The new concessions today may intensify sales of Georgian agricultural products in Russia.
