Israel has paid its last respect to ex-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon today. The official died on Saturday. US Vice President Joseph Biden, Russian Speaker of Parliament Sergey Naryshkin, British ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair, Czech Prime Minister Jiri Rusnok arrived to pay their last respects.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Shimon Peres, Speaker of Parliament Yuli-Yoel Edelstein, Joseph Biden and Tony Blair made speeches.
Peres recalled how he had first met Sharon in the early 1950s. Peres was Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion’s assistant. Sharon was one of Ben-Gurion’s favourites.
The funeral moved from the Knesset to Latrun where the Tank Museum is located and where Sharon had served. Additional security measures were taken. The Iron Dome system was deployed at the family farm of Sharon to prevent missile attacks from Gaza.
