Kerry says "yes" to Iran's participation in Geneva-2

At a press conference today in Paris, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that the United States welcomes the participation of Iran in the Geneva-2 conference, but Tehran must support the Geneva communique.

"We approve the participation of Iran (in Geneva-2), and if Iran confirms its participation in the conference strictly within the goals set out for the Geneva -2 conference, we would welcome its participation. It will also be able to contribute to a peaceful settlement of the issue," Kerry is quoted by Trend.
"Iran should let us and the UN see that they are willing to come to the conference on continuing the work of Geneva-1; it is necessary for Iran to play a positive role and to implement the decisions of Geneva-1," he added.

In turn, the special envoy of the UN and LAS, Lakhdar Brahimi, after talks with the foreign ministers of Russia and the United States, said that Iran should take part in the international conference on Syria.

"Iran is a very important country in the region," he said. "Iran must take part in the international conference on Syria."

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon sent an invitation to Iran to participate in Geneva-2, but it must be confirmed by the countries that initiated the conference, Brahimi says.
