Russia and Iran were reported to be negotiating an exchange of about 500,000 barrels of Iranian oil a day for Russian products on January 10, RIA Novosti reports.
Such a deal was approved at a visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Tehran in December. The deal will not be affected by Western sanctions against Iran because Russia has not signed any of them.
Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry discussed the deal on Wednesday. The Russian minister told the US that Moscow had the right to buy Iranian oil in any volumes and Iran could buy Russian products.
