Azerbaijan does not plan to join NATO and its nteractions with the Alliance are based on pragmatic principles, as stated by Rasim Musabekov, a member of the Azerbaijani parliament and political analyst, and Rustam Mamedov, Head of the subdepartment for the public law at the BSU and Head of the Caspian – Development for the Future NGO.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev recently visited NATO headquarters in Brussels. Musabekov said that cooperation of Azerbaijan and the NATO will continue within the framework of agreements such as the Partnership for Peace. Azerbaijan helps train Afghan security forces, carry out transit to Afghanistan. Unlike Ukraine and Georgia, Azerbaijan has a realistic approach to the partnership and does not take up missions it cannot accomplish, the political analyst explains.
Mamedov noted that the NATO was only an interested subject of international relations. Cooperation of Azerbaijan and the Alliance was mutually beneficial. Besides security aspects, they cooperate in energy security as a priority goal. Cooperation with Turkey encouraged Azerbaijan to adopt NATO standards, he concludes.
