German professor comments on release of Russian oligarch Khodorkovsky

Hans-Henning Schroeder, a Professor of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, has commented on the release of Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky by President Vladimir Putin. He said that Khodorkovsky had been jailed because of overestimated powers.

Schroeder believes that the oligarch was either overconfident or was ready for the risks. The professor supposes that the latter was more likely because not every person could live through 10 years in prison.

The German expert noted that Khodorkovsky, who made his fortune in the 1990s, was not a charismatic persona and was viewed by many as a rich man and a thief. Thus, the oligarch cannot become an active political figure in modern Russia. However, he is also taken as a martyr and may have a certain impact on mid-term political processes. The professor concluded that he was probably released on condition that he would abstain from politics.
