Azerbaijan is commemorating the 137 people killed by Soviet forces on the night of January 19-20, 1990. 744 people were also injured and 841 were illegally arrested that night. State flags were lowered in honor of the occasion. Flowers were brought to graves in the Alley of Sheikhs.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was the first to visit the Alley. He was escorted by state and governmental officials, religious leaders, foreign ambassadors, representatives of international organizations.
Mikhail Gorbachev ordered the troops to enter Baku, causing bloodshed similar to the events in Tbilisi in 1989 and in Vilnius in 1991. Heydar Aliyev criticized Gorbachev’s decision on January 20, 1990.
A minute of silence will be announced at 12.00 pm. Transportation restrictions were imposed.
