Syrian opposition to attend Geneva-2 Conference as Iran skips

The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces will attend the Geneva-2 Conference in Monteux on January 22. Iran has decided to skip the meeting.

The largest opposition organization, the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces said from the very start that it would not attend the conference if Iran participates. It demanded UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to call the invitation for Iran off by 11.00 pm.

The Iranian representative to the UN said that Iran would rather skip Geneva-2 than recognize decisions of the Geneva-1 Conference (one of the main decisions is formation of a transitional government). Ban Ki-moon’s spokesman Martin Nesirky said that the invitation was called off.

Spokesman of the National Coalition Monzer Aqbik responded that the opposition organization will take part in the conference. The Syrian National Council, the largest organization of foreign opposition, left the National Coalition, protesting against the Monteux talks. For this reason, the National Coalition failed to present a list of attendants.

Russian Representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin emphasized that preventing Iran from participating in the peace talks was a bad idea. Spokeswoman of the US State Department Jen Psaki expressed satisfaction of the United States with the decision and hopes that attendants of the conference will end suffering of the Syrian population and start political transformations.
