Austrian political analyst Professor Gerhard Mangott says a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympic games held in Sochi is not an option. The idea of a possible boycott is being widely discussed in the European and American media as the international community is expressing ever more concern over the situation surrounding democracy and human rights in Russia.
According to the expert, there are other ways to pursue the Russian authorities to meet Russia's international obligations, such as regular diplomatic contacts and international conferences.
A boycott of the Olympics would not improve the political situation in Russia, but rather enhance the tensions between Russia and western powers, Mangott says.
