The Syrian government and opposition start negotiations in Geneva today under the mediation of Lakhdar Brahimi, Special Envoy of the UN and Arab League for Syria, Interfax reports.
The Syrian opposition demands the realization of the Geneva Communique, according to which a transitional government will be formed with full authority, as well as control over the military and security.
Ahmed Jarba, leader of the Syrian National Coalition, said on Thursday that President Assad must resign. Syrian Minister for Information Amran az-Zoubi emphasized that Assad will not resign without elections. He plans to run for re-election. The minister added that the government will not sign the Geneva Communique.
