Geneva-2 succeeded despite scandals – expert

The Syrian opposition and government preferred to exchange accusations at the plenary session of the Geneva-2 Conference for Syria on Wednesday. Marina Petrova, a Vestnik Kavkaza expert, said that presence of the government and opposition was already a success, both sides were heard and the scandalous nature of the talks was predictable in Montreux.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem was interrupted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon every time he accused the West of escalating the conflict. Ban believes that both sides of the conflict violated humanitarian law.

Iran was left out of the conference. The Syrian National Coalition threatened to skip the conference, unless the UN withdrew its invitation for Iran. Petrova said that Iran was one of the key players in the region and its absence at the conference was a big loss.
