Armenian government concerned about Lake Sevan

The Armenian government has passed amendments to the law on the restoration and protection of Lake Sevan and its ecosystem today, News.am reports.The lake will be under additional pressure of irrigation systems until 2019. The maximum flow augmentation will be increased from 170 to 240 million cubic meters a year, depending on the water level in the irrigation system of the Ararat Valley, said Andranik Andreasyan, Head of the Armenian State Committee for Water.A set of water reservoirs will be built by 2019 to solve the irrigation problem and rid farmers of having to use water from the lake.The State Committee is making feasibility studies for the Egvard and Vedi reservoirs. The first one will need $140 million for construction, the second on $35-45 million.Financing of the project has been discussed with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the French Development Agency (AFD).
