Wendy Sherman, Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs, said at the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations that the deal Russia and Iran were planning to sign to exchange Iranian oil for Russian goods was a threat to the efforts of the six mediators to sign an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, RIA Novosti reports.
According to reports in early January, Russia was planning to buy about 500,000 barrels of oil a day in exchange for equipment and goods. White House spokesman Jay Carney said that the US will call for sanctions against Tehran and Moscow should the deal be made.
Iran signed an agreement with the six mediators in Geneva on November 24, 2013. Its realization started on January 20.
