UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that chemical weapons will be moved from Syria by June 30. He added that Syrian Foreign minister Walid Muallem will assist in the process, ITAR-TASS reports.
OPCW spokesman Michael Luhan said on February 5 that there was no need to take any action against Syria for the delayed process of chemical transportation. Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad assured that the government will fulfil the agreement signed with the UN and the OPCW. The diplomat reminded that terrorist attacks were slowing down the process of transporting chemical weapons to Latakia Port.
Initially, all weapons were to be transported from Syria by December 31. The first portion of chemical materials was transported from Syria on January 7, the second on January 27. Following reports said that the shipments were only 5% of all the components needed to be transported. Instability was named the reason for the process being dragged out.
