The Egyptian military has nominated the country's Minister of Defense, Field Marshal Abdel Fattah as-Sisi, for the coming presidential elections. The minister has not yet said whether he would indeed run for the presidency or not, but he is expected to voice his final decision soon.
"Many times in the modern history of Egypt the military turned out to be the only force capable of taking power in the country. This happened in 1952-1953, when Naser came to power. It seems like something similar is happening right now," an aide to the deputy head of Russia's Federation Council, Ambassador Andrey Baklanov says.
According to him, the military remained patient for a long time. The army remained neutral during the political crisis until it simply had to interfere, the diplomat says. The role the army played in this process is crucial, Baklanov says.
The diplomat believes the Egyptian population understands that the military played a stabilizing role in the crisis and will show support for the new president.
