A new war to start in Afghanistan after Nato forces leave, expert believes

Twenty five years after the Soviet Union withdrew its forces from Afghanistan, the country is in a similar situation as Nato troops are now set to leave Afghanistan. Vestnik Kavkaza discussed the situation with chief editor of the Problems of National Strategy Magazine Adzhar Kurtov.

According to him, the position of the majority of analysts, who say that the situation in the country will change for the worse immediately so that the state itself may collapse, is too pessimistic.

First of all, the Karzai government is far from being democratic or able to provide security or conduct necessary reforms, the expert says. Moreover, one should bear in mind that the Nato forces are not going to be withdrawn completely, he stresses.

However, a new round of the never-ending civil war is quite possible, Kurtov believes. Without military and financial support from its Western allies the Karzai administration is likely to lose control over the situation in the country, he explains.
