Experts discuss Iran's talks with 5+1 group in Vienna

The new round of Iran's talks with the 5+1 group (the US, the UK, France, Russia, China and Germany), which has recently started in Vienna, was the main topic of a panel discussion held in Moscow today.

Addressing attendees of the event, head of the Centre for Researching Contemporary Iran Rajab Safarov said that the parties had reached mutual understanding but no further progress had been made so far.

"The situation surrounding a possible agreement is equivocal," the expert says. "The United States demonstrates its negative approach, while Europe remains inactive."

According to Vladimir Yevseyev, the recent developments were quite predictable. It has always been clear that the United States would not lift the sanctions imposed on Iran in the near future.

First of all, the sanctions were imposed by the US Congress, where the position of the Israeli lobby is quite strong, and President Obama is unlikely to withstand Congress, the expert says. In addition to this, the sanctions are a powerful tool to influence Iran's politics and the US is not going to give it up, the expert believes.
