Expert Poltorakov rules out civil war in Ukraine

The Ukrainian parliament restored the 2004 Constitution, released Yulia Timoshenko and stabilized the situation in the country last weekend. Ukrainian political analyst Alexey Poltorakov told Vestnik Kavkaza that there were no sings of an oncoming civil war. He reminded that attendants of the Kharkov congress spoke for united Ukraine, although some federalization was possible.

Poltorakov noted that the presidential power was still in force and there were chances to resolve the conflict peacefully.

Concerning President Victor Yanukovych, the expert said, his fate was still in his hands, although maneuvers were still limited. Poltorakov believes that Yanukovych still has good chances to come out of the situation in good light. He can still unite the eastern and south-eastern parts of Ukraine, starting from Kharkov and Donetsk and ending in the Crimea.

In the expert’s words, the main political intrigue today is who will become the president. Yulia Timoshenko hinted presidential ambitions right after her release from jail. Poltorakov predicts that some third force uninvolved in the past political stories should emerge. He reminded that Timoshenko was still associated with corruption. The political analyst predicts that such third force could be a law enforcer with a good political reputation and no involvement in politics in the past five years.
