Black Sea view on Ukrainian protests

Concerning the protests in Ukraine, Togrul Ismail, a docent of the Faculty of International Relations at the TOBB University of Economics and Technology (Ankara), said that Turkey had always taken a balanced approach and had no interests in changing the balance that could cause an escalation of tensions in the Black Sea Region and Trans-Caucasus.

Turkey is not interested in the appearance of other forces in the region, though Turkey is a NATO member. Ismail noted that Turkey wanted military cooperation with Russia and to organize joint drills. Turkey wants the sides in the conflict in Ukraine to be calm and abstain from further escalations.

Ismail said that many Crimean Tatars lived in Turkey and the fate of the Tatars in the Crimea was a big concern. Ankara wants Ukraine to maintain its territorial integrity. Turkey does not want any separation of Ukrainian territories.

Hassan Selim Ozertem, a member of the USAK International Research Center, believes that there are three scenarios of the Ukrainian event for Turkey: offer humanitarian aid, request the UN to react to the problem or ask the Ukrainian authorities to be less harsh with the Crimean Tatars. The expert assured that Turkey will not interfere in the process directly.
