Ukraine's crisis revives Cold War

Tensions in Ukraine are increasing as the separatist movement has grown in the Crimea. Tensions between Russia and Western powers are also increasing. Vestnik Kavkaza discussed the situation surrounding Ukraine with Matthias Dornfeld, a researcher from the Freie Universität Berlin.

Above all the expert underlined that, according to Zbigniew Brzezinski, Ukraine's integration into European and North-Atlantic bodies is crucial for containing Russia. "One should understand that after the pause made in the 90s the Cold War has restarted," he stresses.

The EU is also interested in Ukraine's integration into Europe, since the country is the key to the success of the Eastern Partnership project, Dornfeld underlines. Moreover Ukraine is a very attractive market with 45 million consumers, he says.

Speaking about the future of Ukraine's territorial integrity, the German expert stressed that he does not believe in the future dissolution of the Ukrainian state. However the situation in the Crimea is indeed very dangerous, Dornfeld says.
