Normalizing the situation in Ukraine on EU Council agenda

Foreign Ministers at an extraordinary meeting of the European Council on Foreign Affairs in Brussels will consider policy issues and support the people of Ukraine, EU diplomatic chief Catherine Ashton said today.

"I have convened an extraordinary meeting of the EU foreign affairs council because of serious concerns about the situation in Ukraine. We need to see a detente in the situation. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss political issues, and, of course , continue to support the people of Ukraine. This is an important meeting," Ashton said before the EU Council for Foreign Affairs, RIA Novosti reports.

On Saturday Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin expressed the hope that the international community will influence Kiev to normalize the situation.
