Obama hopes Crimea would cancel referendum

US President Barack Obama said at a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk yesterday that he hoped that Crimea and Sevastopol would cancel the upcoming March 16 referendum. Obama’s hopes were inspired by the meeting US Secretary of State John Kerry will have with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, RIA Novosti reports.

Obama reminded that the US will not recognize the referendum.

The Supreme Council of Crimea passed the Declaration of Independence and plans to join Russia. It has already become an independent republic.
