The Russian Defense Ministry has started development of a WWI website with about 950,000 archive materials and 7.7 million personal documents of Russian officers that will be digitalized by 2018, RIA Novosti reports.
The website will have archive documents, interactive models of WWI battles of 1914-1918s, 3D models of memorials.
The Russian Foreign Ministry and the State Archive have approved the project. Russian diplomatic missions abroad and offices of the Defense Ministry in Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany and Romania take part in the project.
The portal will be launched on August 1, 2014, to mark the 100th anniversary of WWI. The work will be accomplished by 2018, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI.
