A referendum devoted to the official status of the peninsula is being held on Sunday in Crimea. The Crimeans are expected to chose between restoring the 1992 Crimean Constitution, which increases the republic's autonomy within the Ukrainian state, and joining the Russian Federation.
The referendum has been condemned as illegitimate by the Ukrainian government, the OSCE, the United States and the European Union. The UN has not managed to adopt a resolution supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity, as Russia has used its right to veto the document.
