Rostelecom has now been obliged to provide communication services all over Russia, RIA Novosti reports.
The Federation Council of Russia passed amendments to the law on communications in January. The first version of amendments were developed by the Ministry for Communications. It was approved by the lower house of the Russian parliament in mid-2013. The communication operator covering two thirds of the country was chosen to be the universal operator in Russia.
Rostelecom was chosen basing on analyses of the list of operators. It is the only operator that can fulfill demands of the federal law. The document comes into force on April 1, 2014.
