Municipal elections are being held in Turkey. Polling stations opened at 7am local time on Sunday and will be closed at 4pm in some districts. In others the polls started at 8am and will end at 5pm local time.
Over 52 million people are expected to take part in the vote. 26 parties are competing for places in local legislatures. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Republican People's Party (CHP) are believed to be the major competitors.
