Georgian MPs lose immunity

The Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office has been granted permission to persecute Roland Akhalay of ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili’s United National Movement for racketeering a businessman, Polit.ru reports.Lawyer Shalva Shavgulize, deputy head of the parliament committee for human rights, noted that the law did not allow the arrests and persecution of MPs. The parliament passed amendments proposed by Shavgulidze for the Criminal Code. The Prosecutor General’s Office may now initiate cases against members of parliament, though it still needs permission of the parliament to make arrests.
