Fuele: EU concerned with Turkey

The European Commission has always been a strong supporter of Turkish integration into the EU, but concern has risen over recent incident in the country, the EU's enlargement chief said Thursday.

"Events over the past three months have cast doubt on Turkey's commitment to European values and standards," EU enlargement commissioner Stefan Fuele said, citing tightened control of the judiciary and "massive transfers" of police and prosecutors as part of Erdogan's purging of the bodies, reports Reuters.

Fuele listed the positive developments of 2013 as the opening of the 22nd negotiating chapter, which is on regional policy; the starting of the visa liberalization dialogue and the signing of the readmission agreement; the development of trade relations; and successful cooperation in energy and foreign policy.
