Turkish President Abdullah Gul: NATO countries must display solidarity towards maintaining stability in the Black Sea region

NATO countries must display solidarity towards maintaining stability in the Black Sea region, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said at a meeting with his Latvian counterpart Andris Berzins.

"Nato decisions were taken at various levels in both the military and civilian spheres. All this work is aimed at finding solutions to problems through dialogue and international law, and that the crisis is not exacerbated. Hopefully no one will ignore international law and will not show disrespect to the UN-recognized territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country," ITAR-TASS cites Gul referring to Ukraine.

The Turkish president said that Ankara is not restricted to contacts with its Nato allies, but also "conducts regular consultations with Russia" about the situation, and that "Russia is one of the most important countries in the region."

The leaders also discussed the problem of the transport infrastructure linking the two countries, some of which passes through the territory of Ukraine. "We discussed the possibility of transferring transport to the territories of other countries. Hopefully this will not lead to delays," Gul noted.
