Caspian foreign ministers gather in Moscow

Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov (Russia), Elmar Mammadyarov (Azerbaijan), Yerlan Idrisov (Kazakhstan), Mohammad Javad Zarif (Iran) and Rashid Meredov (Turkmenistan) have gathered for the Conference of Caspian States in Moscow to discuss preparations for the 4th Caspian Summit in Astrakhan, Kommersant reports.

The ministers will analyze the progress of experts in implementing the agreements signed at the Baku summit in 2010, security enforcement, environmental protection, preservation of biological resources and prevention of disasters.

The convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea will be initialled. The document forbids deployment of forces of non-Caspian states in the region. The foreign ministers will continue discussions of free maritime transportation and demarcation of the 25-mile national zone in territorial waters.

Pritchin, an expert of the RAS Institute for Oriental Studies, expressed confidence that all agreements would only be announced at the Astrakhan summit in September. He clarified that the ministers will discuss the signing of three agreements.
