Sawsan Haddad joins Syrian presidential campaign as candidate

Sawsan Haddad has been registered as one of the candidates for president of Syria by the Supreme Constitutional Court, RIA Novosti reports.President Bashar al-Assad has not announced plans to run for president.According to Speaker of the Syrian Parliament Mohammed al-Lahham, the candidates for president are Sawsan Haddad (an engineer from Latakia), Samir Maala (a law professor from Quneitra), Mohammed Firas Rajjuh (a Damascus resident) and Abdel-Salam Salameh (a resident from the Homs Province). They have joined businessman Hassan Abdullah al-Nuri and Aleppo communist Maher al-Hajjar.The elections were set for June 3. In March, The Syrian parliament passed a bill allowing several candidates with the support of at least 35 out of 250 members of local parliaments to stand for president. The UN and some Western countries have already condemned the elections.
