Azerbaijan accuses EU of being passive

Nowruz Mamedov, deputy head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration and head of its section for international relations, said at the Second Global Open Society Forum that Brussels removed the territorial integrity point from the association agreement with the EU. He clarified that the EU had been recognizing territorial integrity of Azerbaijan for 15 years and had changed its attitude in the last year.

Aydyn Mirzazadeh, a member of the Azerbaijani parliament, said that the EU was encouraging Azerbaijan with declarations but was doing nothing against Armenia for taking over its territories in Nagorno-Karabakh. The lawmaker reminded that authorities of the occupied territories were in no way restricted to visit EU countries.

According to the legislator, Mamedov’s speech was a major reprimand towards the EU, reflecting the attitude of the Azerbaijani government towards the dragged Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

Fikret Sadykhov, a professor of the Western University, pointed out that passiveness of the EU in resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was taken with irritation, bewilderment and misunderstanding. In his words, the EU did not compel Armenia to withdraw from the 7 occupied districts around Nagorno-Karabakh. Sadykhov believes that removal of “territorial integrity” from the association agreement was an attempt of Europe to distance itself from problems of the South Caucasus. He emphasized that Baku would never sign such association document because Nagorno-Karabakh was the top priority of its policy. The expert added that Azerbaijan was expecting all partners to respect the international law.
